“My First Senior Moment: The Cast Iron Skillet Incident”

“I reserve the right to change my mind” – Charles Fillmore

This quote has become my life’s motto lately. It seems that with each passing year, I’m more open to embracing change and adapting to new realities.

A few weeks ago, I experienced my first true “senior moment.” One of my favorite pastimes is washing dishes. I find it incredibly therapeutic. My son-in-law is a passionate self-taught chef, and he loves experimenting with all sorts of culinary gadgets. One of his favorites is a large cast iron skillet that requires seasoning. I usually wash it first and then let it sit on a low flame for a few minutes before rubbing it with olive oil.

Well, my first senior moment happened when I did just that, finished the rest of the dishes, wiped down the counters, and left the kitchen. I headed upstairs to my office and got engrossed in my grant research. A few hours later, my daughter came home and found the pan still on the stove (thankfully, the flame was on low). I had completely forgotten about it!

I was devastated. My mind raced through all the horrible possibilities. To be honest, I’m still not entirely over it. But I decided to be proactive. I started reading articles about keeping my memory sharp and staying cognitively alert. One technique is to change the way you do things. So now, I always check the stove before leaving the kitchen, even if I’m just grabbing a glass of water.

This is my musing and memory for today. I’m new to blogging, so any advice is welcome. My nephew, a social media expert, recommended removing “Medicare” from the title, as it suggested a focus on healthcare. Hence, the birth of “Mango Memories and Musings.”

Mango Julie is my favorite mango. I’m not sure what it’s called in the USA, but it’s the most delicious mango ever! It’s so good that I even eat the peel! Julie mangoes remind me of life – sweet and yummy, getting better as it ripens. You have to wait for it to get ripe, but wait too long, and it rots.

Feel free to share any “senior moments” you’ve experienced and how they’ve changed the way you do things.
